ARLENE ROSE FREIN

GARNER - Arlene Rose Frein, 90, of Garner died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 28th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Dennis W. Miller officiating. Concelebrants will be Rev. Msgr. John W. Hemann and Fr. Paul Lippstock. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner with a rosary at 2 P.M., a VFW Auxiliary service at 5 P.M. followed by a Scriptural Wake service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Arlene, the daughter of Frank and Vera (Engstler) Rayhons, was born September 30, 1923, on the family farm northwest of Garner. She graduated from Hayfield High School in 1940 as the Hayfield Band Queen. Following high school, Arlene worked at Schoneman's Cafe and Roe's Grocery Store in Garner. On September 13, 1949 she was united in marriage to Wilmer Frein at St. Boniface Catholic Church. The couple farmed first at the family farm northwest of Garner and continued farming south of Forest City until moving to Garner in 1961. Arlene worked as a cook for Garner-Hayfield Community Schools from 1963 until 1990. In December of 2011, she moved to Cardinal Grove Assisted Living in Garner.

Arlene enjoyed gardening and flowers, sewing, making quilts and mending, bread making and reading. She especially enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren who lovingly called her Great Frein. Her Catholic faith and her family were the two most important things in her life.

Arlene was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church and St. Boniface Rosary Society. She was also a member of VFW Auxiliary and WS Homemakers.

Arlene is survived by her four children, Susan Whitehurst of Garner, Joyce (Norm) Lunning of Garner, Mary Lou (Arlyn) Nedved of Garner and Judy (Steve) Winter of Garner; eleven grandchildren, Scot (Tess) Whitehurst, Thomas (Lisa) Whitehurst, Kari (James) Brown, Molly (Brent) Winter, Cody Lunning, Jill Nedved, Kim (Michael) Meyering, Laura Nedved, Jonathan (Brittany) Winter, Holly (Ryan) Friederich and Jesse Winter; fourteen great grandchildren, Zeb, Zadin, Charlie, Everet and Madison Whitehurst, Taylor, Dylan and Brooklyn Brown, Archer and Lane Winter, Jace Meyering, Ava Winter and Tate and Payten Friederich; a sister, Veronica Horecka of Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
