GARNER - Arlo L. Smith, 74, of Garner died Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner with Rev. Ed Bard, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. A flag presentation will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel on Saturday. Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arlo Leroy Smith, the son of Arlo "Pete" and Dora (Carter) Smith, was born July 15, 1938 at Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1956. On June 27, 1959 he married Orla Jane Andersen. They made their home in Montrose where Arlo worked for the city as public works director. Arlo served his country in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 being stationed in Germany. Following his discharge Arlo and Orla returned to Iowa and in 1980 moved to Garner. Arlo was employed by the city of Garner in the public works department as street supervisor until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren's activities, woodcarving, chair caning, playing cards, bowling, playing baseball in his younger years and going to auctions. He also was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He was a member of the Edwin Jante VFW Post 5515 in Garner and the Eagle's Club in Ft. Madison.

Arlo is survived by his wife, Orla, of Garner; four children and their families, Dane Smith of Waterloo, Shane Smith of Urbandale and his two children, Sinjin and Sage, Nickki (Michael) Oborny of Garner and their two sons, Skylar and Austin, and George (Tara) Smith of Garner and their three sons, Chase, Reece and Carson; two sisters, Pat (Maurice) Moore of Montrose and Rose Heidbreder of Montrose; and a brother, Paul (Faylene) Smith of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Danny Smith.
