Dennis Dean Underbakke, the son of Bert and Alida (Oswald) Underbakke was born August 12, 1927 at Rake. He was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. Dennis graduated from Rake High School in 1944. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy being stationed in the Philippines. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa and attended Waldorf and Luther College. On September 25, 1948 he married Alyce Reene Okland at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. The couple made their home in Rake until they moved to Thompson in 1954. The Thompson community became home for the couple as it was where they lived, worked and raised their family. Early in his work career, Dennis was co-owner of the Thompson Produce and later worked many years at People’s State Bank. Dennis enjoyed fishing, golfing and hunting but was happiest when he was in the presence of his family.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson and the Thompson VFW.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Alyce, of Forest City; four children, Bruce (Jean) Underbakke of Morristown, MN, Joan (Ray) Furst of Randall, William (Deb) Underbakke of Bemidji, MN, and Cynthia Underbakke of Albert Lea, MN; four grandchildren, Cortney (Brett), Dena (Rick), Eric and Alex; and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Meredith.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, Audrey Underbakke, Muriel Leibrand and Bevis and Deryl Underbakke. He will be missed by all of us left behind to remember his wonderful sense of humor and kind heart.
