GARNER - John J. Haag, Jr., 74, of Garner died Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 12th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner with a rosary at 2:45 P.M. and a Scriptural wake service at 5 P.M. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

John Joseph Haag, Jr., the son of John and Vilo (Hanson) Haag, was born November 2, 1938 in Thompson. He graduated from Thompson High School in 1956. Following graduation he worked as a bricklayer in Mason City for a number of years. On July 2, 1960 he married Freda Gerdes at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center. They lived in Clear Lake, Buffalo Center and most recently Garner. John owned and operated several bars in the north Iowa area including the Lamplighter in Buffalo Center, Half-Way in Duncan and then retired for a few years. He then came out of retirement and operated the Watering Hole in Clear Lake. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gambling and watching the stock market.

John is survived by his wife, Freda, of Garner; five children, Julie (Paul) Edwards of Britt, Tom Haag (special friend, Holly) of Meservey, Bob (Kathy) Haag of Ventura, Sue Thomas of Lake Elsinore, CA and Terry Haag (special friend, Alena) of Swaledale; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dyrald( Jayne) Haag of Georgia and Duane (Mary Ann) Haag of Illinois; and a sister, Cynthia (Jeffry) Henning of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and Jerome Haag; and a sister, Debbie Reynolds.
