GARNER - Lola V. Fredin, 89, of Garner formerly of Swaledale died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Monday July 21st at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Pastor Paul Evans officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Township Cemetery in Swaledale.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel 160 E. 4th St., in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Family and sent in care of Cataldo Funeral Home, 760 Center Ave., Garner, IA 50438.

Lola Violet Fredin, the daughter of Herman and Meta (Bredlow) Gast, was born October 8, 1924 on the home farm west of Klemme. She was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Methodist Church west of Klemme. She attended Liberty No. 8 country school and graduated from Garner High School in 1942. She received her Normal Training Teaching Certificate and went out and taught in rural schools. Lola taught one year at Liberty No. 8 and three years at Liberty No. 4 in Hancock County. On September 1, 1946 she was united in marriage to Jim Fredin at the Klemme Methodist Church. To this union they were blessed with six children, Carolyn, Janet, Jerry, Diane, Debbie, and Doug. They lived on the farm and worked for Jim's great aunt, Mrs. Amelia Arnold, until Jim's work forced them to move to Fort Dodge. They later moved to Des Moines, Osceola, NE, Mason City, Portland and then to Swaledale in 1960. Lola went to work at Rushing's SuperValu Grocery Store where she worked as a meat wrapper, a job she held in several different stores for twenty-six years. After retiring, she was elected mayor of Swaledale, a position she held for six years. Lola enjoyed working for the town of Swaledale.

She was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church where she held many offices such as lay leader, Sunday school teacher, Commission of Missions and president of UMW. She also was a member of Swaledale Area Ladies (SAL), and the Swaledale Cemetery Society.

Lola is survived by her six children, Carolyn Borger of Mt. Vernon, Janet Fredin of Mason City, Jerry (Rosann) Fredin of Wichita, KS, Diane Biederman of Mason City, Debbie Opheim of Charlotte, NC and Doug (Kaye) Fredin of Rockwell; grandchildren, Jim Nadeau (Cathy McNeal), Tami Price, Cassandra (Keith) Jamieson, Jaynann (Ryan) Donker, Jeremy (Kellie) Fredin, Travis (Kelly) Opheim, Dustin Opheim, Kyle (Elyse) Fredin, Tyler (Jackie) Fredin, Allison Fredin, Heidi (Scott) Gojkovich and Heather (Lucas) Roth; seventeen great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Gast of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Fredin, March 14, 1987; brothers, Kenneth and Loren Gast; sister, Mildred Zwald and twin sister, Lois Gibbs.
