Richard “Dick” Grothe, 75 of Leland, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland with Lay Minister Rose Visser officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 – 6:30 P.M. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St. Forest City, Iowa 50436.
Burial of cremains will take place in Forest Home Cemetery in Leland, Iowa in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in Dick’s name.

Dick was born June 9th, 1942 in Bloomfield Nebraska to Joe & Rose (Hettenbach) Grothe. He was the youngest of 8 children. The family moved to the Forest City area in the early 50’s. Dick attended Forest City community school. On July 23rd 1960 he was united in marriage to Sandra Lund of Lake Mills. In the spring of 1962 he and Sandra moved to Woodburn, OR. Where he first learned the carpentry trade from his brother in law. In May of 1965 the family moved back to Iowa after Dick fell from a roof in which he suffered a back injury that required surgery. He later started working for Bartelson Carpentry. In 1978 he started his business, Grothe Concrete & Const. He was very hardworking and took pride in every job he did. He loved being outdoors and working from sun up to sun down until he retired at the age of 60 in 2002.

After retirement Dick and Sandy took advantage of their time by spending it with friends (The NIT WITS) while driving from different camp grounds around the local area in their Winnebago. He also loved going to car shows showing off his cars which he also took a lot of pride in. One car in particular, his ‘55 Chevy Belair. Family was very important to Dick and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid card player and many hours were spent around the dining table playing different card games with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Christine (Tommy) Hembree; grandchildren, Brandi Bushman of Albert Lea, Benjamin (Tara) Grothe of Lake Mills, Kelsey (Brandon) Lamping of Forest City, Nick (Macy Rien Tzoulis) Grothe of Colorado Springs, Noah Grothe , Grace Grothe; 5 great-grandchildren, Trinity Bushman, Carter Lamping, Halo Bushman, Olivia Lamping and Kamdyn Grothe.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Joe & Rose Grothe; three sons, Brian (Beanhead) Grothe, Gregory Grothe, Terrance (Terry) Grothe; brother in law, Joe Zila, brother in law, Jake Brouwer, brother in law, Merle Olson; sister, Frieda Olson; brother, Paul Grothe, brother, Joe Grothe JR and sister, Jenny Brouwer.
