Forest City -- Sherman W. Oleson, age 78 of Forest City, died Saturday, November 19, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. Sherman Wayne Oleson was born on a farm near Leland, Iowa on November 18, 1927, the son of Roger and Dora (Gettis) Oleson. He received his elementary education in Leland and graduated from Forest City High School in 1945. He worked various jobs in the area until enlisting in the US Navy in 1950.



On September 3, 1951, he was united in marriage to Anita Walden at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple made their home in Hawaii and San Diego until Shermanís enlistment was over. The couple returned to Forest City and have lived here since.



Sherman did roofing work for Merle Sorensen and worked at Home Lumber in Forest City before beginning a long career at the Forest City Post Office. Sherman enjoyed working. He delivered Sunday papers, worked at the Forest City Theater and enjoyed part-time work at the Forest City Greenhouse. He grew up on the farm with horses and they remained a life-long passion of his.



Sherman enjoyed collecting stamps and coins. He loved his family and treasured time spent with his grandchildren. He died at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa on November 19, 2005 at the age of 78 years.



Sherman is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anita Oleson of Forest City and his children: Shawn Stout and husband Joe of Long Lake, Minnesota; Michael Oleson and wife Marie of Forest City, Iowa; Maureen Jacobson and husband Rich of Grimes, Iowa; Megan Townsend of Newark, Delaware; eight grandchildren: John, Christopher and Caitlin Stout, Marissa and Molly Oleson, Patrick and Sarah Jacobson and Hannah Townsend. Also surviving are seven siblings: Raymond Oleson of Northwood, Iowa, Roger Oleson of Anchorage, Alaska, Berl Oleson of Dexter, Minnesota, Evelyn Urbatch of Omaha, Nebraska, Ruby Loken of Mason City, Iowa, Emory Oleson of Port Charlotte, Florida and Charlotte Stohr of Thompson, Iowa.



Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Valere (Frank), Ronald, Allen and Fred Oleson.
