Stanley D. Hallett was born on a farm south of Forest City, Iowa on June 19, 1919, the son of Allen and Mae (Juhl) Hallett. He was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller and received his education in rural school near his home. As a young boy he lived with his family in Gettysburg, SD for a time.

During World War II, Stan worked in an air defense plant in Baltimore, MD and was later transferred to Omaha, NE. On April 15, 1943, he married Frances Haugland in Omaha.
