DeEtta Annabelle Hartwig, the daughter of Rudolph and Lenna (Perkins) Hartwig, was born September 5, 1912 in Corwith. The family moved to Kanawha where DeEtta graduated from high school. Following high school, she worked for the Kanawha Telephone Company. She later attended Mason City Junior College to study accounting. In 1942, she moved to Garner to accept a position as an accountant for the Rural Electric Cooperative until she retired in 1977.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was active in women’s groups and helped with many activities of her church. DeEtta was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, which was an important part of her life. She loved to travel with family and friends. Padre Island, Texas, Arizona and Grand Marais, Minnesota were some of her favorite places to visit. She was also fortunate to travel abroad and enjoyed trips to the Scandinavia countries and the Holy Land.

All of her life, DeEtta had a passion for helping others. She was always there in times of need for her family and friends. She especially enjoyed providing love and support to her nieces and nephews. In the community, DeEtta helped many people obtain their high school graduate equivalency diploma (GED), delivered Meals on Wheels, took those in need to doctor’s appointments and volunteered for the Hancock County Historical Museum. For her volunteer work, DeEtta was presented the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1985 from Governor Terry Branstad.

DeEtta was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Verola (Ralph) Yepsen and Marguerite (Leslie) Brower; and brothers, Merle (Opal) Hartwig and Robert (Wanda) Hartwig.

DeEtta will be remembered as a special lady who has touched the lives of many people with her love and understanding. Her favorite saying was, “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”
