Dorothy “Dort” Ann Schaefer, daughter of Clarence and Carrie (Sweers) Schaefer, was born on April 2, 1949, in Mason City. She grew up on a farm northwest of Britt and graduated from Britt High School in 1967. Following high school, she furthered her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Dort began her professional career at Control Data Corporation in Minneapolis, where she dedicated five years of service. Upon returning to Britt, she was the secretary for Francis Zrostlik at Iowa Mold Tooling in Garner. Dort then worked briefly at IMT Transport before joining Stellar Industries in Garner, where she remained until her retirement. She also contributed her time and skills part-time for Rex Taylor Auctions. At the age of 48, Dort was diagnosed with breast cancer, showing tremendous resilience as she remained cancer-free for 15 years. Unfortunately, the illness returned and progressed to other parts of her body. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, fishing, and traveling to Alaska and North Carolina.
She was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church and was active in Luther League for a time.
Dort is survived by her five siblings, Robert Schaefer of Britt, Richard (LaDonna) Schaefer of Britt, Dennis (Nancy) Schaefer of Garner, Dean (Kathy) Schaefer of Britt and Diane Schaefer of Durham, NC; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister-in-law, Marlys Schaefer.
