He attended Estherville schools, graduating from high school in 1932. He later attended Estherville Junior College for one year. On May 23, 1940 he was united in marriage to Eleanor L. Carlsen at Palestine Lutheran Church near Dolliver, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Carlton Jerome, Carmen Elizabeth, Richard Vernon and Roberta Eleanor. Everett worked from 1934 to 1951 at the post office in Estherville, except for thirteen months in the U.S. Army from February 1945 to March 1946. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to his post office job in Estherville. From 1951 to 1960, he was employed in banking in Estherville. In August of 1960, the family moved to Forest City where Everett was business manager of Waldorf College until 1973. He then sold insurance and real estate for a time. He began his own real estate appraisal business in 1974. After Eleanor passed away in 2003, he continued to live in his home until December 3, 2014 when he moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Forest City.

Everett came to assurance of faith in Jesus as Saviour in 1933. This was a major turning point in his life. Most of his spare time during adult years was devoted to church related activities. He taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent and served on various church boards and committees for over 50 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1960. Everett had opportunities to share the good news of God with others in public settings. He often spoke at Monday Vespers at Forest Plaza Assisted Living, filled in as preacher in area churches, and for many years taught an adult Sunday School class at Immanuel Lutheran.

Community involvement included the Planning and Zoning Commission at Estherville, Oakland Cemetery Board and Winnebago County Board of Review in Forest City.

He is survived by his children, Rev. Carlton Shaw of Lake Mills, Carmen Shaw of Oshkosh, WI and Roberta Shaw of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter-in-law, Beth Shaw of Mason City; seven grandchildren and their families, Eric (Terri) Shaw and their two sons, Brendon and Owen, Beth (John) Satre and their four children, Caleb, Eleanor, Daniel and Jakob, Andrew Shaw, Sarah Shaw, Scott Shaw, Malinda Shaw and Daniel Shaw; a brother, Joseph Shaw of Northfield, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
