Joann Ruth (Jacobson) Hall, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Haven Homes in Maple Plain, MN.
A small family service will be held in the spring of 2026, on the hill at Ellington Prairie Cemetery in Iowa and will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Haven Homes in Maple Plain, MN or Park Nicollet Hospice in St. Louis Park, MN.
Joann was born at home on the family farm outside of Thompson, Iowa to Ludvig and Mabel Jacobson on October 8, 1936. She was the second child born into a family of 14 children who grew up on a farm outside of Rake, IA. She graduated from Rake High School in 1954. She attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Iowa, founded by the sisters of Mercy. She received her RN degree in 1957. After graduating with her RN degree, she worked for Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa. Here is where she met Caroll Hall, while providing care for Clara Hall, after a stroke.They were married on December 7, 1957, at Trinity Lutheran Church outside of Rake, Iowa. They had a wonderful marriage that would last for 58 years, until his death in 2015. In the early years, they farmed the (Hall) home place, outside of Garner, Iowa. Three children would follow; Shelly & Cindy both born in Iowa and Steve would follow, born in Brookings, SD. They enjoyed a full life for 26 years in Brookings, SD. She worked as a clinic nurse for many years following her professional love of nursing. She was involved with numerous organizations, the ALCW, 4-H, Ascension Lutheran Church Choir, Sons of Norway and other neighborhood groups. Joann was always involved with singing in her church choirs over the years, no matter where she lived and still sang at Haven Homes up until the end of her life. Whenever there was a service there or other group activities that involved singing, Joann was there lifting up the message in song. Joann and Caroll took many trips in the U.S. and abroad. In their retirement years they joined the ELCA Mission Builders and were involved in the building or remodeling of Lutheran Churches in MT, NM and Gehring, NE.2
Joann is survived by her three children, Michelle (George) Ulvestad, Cynthia (Rico) Hall-Duran and Steven (Lia) Hall; seven grandchildren, Amanda (Tyler) Steen, Christina (Erik) Hanson, Nicole (Grant) Lanning, Thea (Brian) Link, Nicholas (Amber) Hall, Jacob (Madeline) Hall and Christopher Hall; seven great-grandchildren and with another one on the way. There are many Jacobson siblings still alive (10) and many extended family members who were a big part of her life and will carry on the memory of her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years and three siblings.
Joann was known for her love of family, community, music, nursing and having fun with people she knew and didn’t know. She lived her faith and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was fun-loving and she always had a smile to share. She was someone you could always talk to.
