FOREST CITY - John M. McCormick, 65, of Forest City died Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a long battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 Monday, March 10th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Lector will be Becky McCormick. Usher will be Robert Kral. Honorary bearers will be David Frederick, Louis Schmidt and Larry Gilbert. Music will be provided by organist, Mary Kopacek, who will accompany the church choir. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

John Michael McCormick, the son of Daniel and Joyce (Tillinghast) McCormick, was born July 1, 1948 at Forest City. He graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1967 and furthered his education at an electronic school in Des Moines. John served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973. Following his honorable discharge he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln graduating in 1978. After graduation, he worked as a counselor for the Lincoln Correctional Center. He later moved to Garner where he lived for a few years before making his home in Forest City. John was employed as the Hancock County Director of Veterans Affairs until his retirement due to ill health. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

John is survived by his parents, Daniel and Joyce McCormick of Garner; three daughters, Melinda McCormick of Forest City, Shannon (Nate) Zable and their two children, Peyton and Hayden of San Antonio, TX and Danielle McCormick (fiancé, Ryan McMullen) of Greenwood, NE; two brothers, Len (Mary) McCormick of Hudson, IA and Paul (Becky) McCormick of Rollingstone, MN; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
