Lois E. Conaway, 86, of Highland, Illinois, formerly of Britt, passed away Friday, May 22, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Britt with Rev. Anna Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday at Cataldo Funeral Home, 178 First Ave. S.W., Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church.
Lois Elaine Conaway, the daughter of Clarence and Leona (Monson) Weiland, was born on August 2, 1939, in Garner, Iowa. She attended Hayfield Consolidated School before moving to Britt, where she graduated from Britt High School in 1957. Following high school, Lois worked at Des Moines Insurance. On August 1, 1958, she was married to Charles A. Conaway, Jr. at First Lutheran Church in Britt. The couple made their home in Britt, where they raised their five children. Lois was deeply committed to her community and church. She dedicated her time to teaching Sunday School, Bible School, and Confirmation classes at First Lutheran Church, where she also served as a deacon on the church council. She was an active member of the Britt Lioness Club, serving as its president, and participated in the Red Hat Society. Lois contributed to the community by helping deliver Meals on Wheels. Alongside her husband, she helped manage the Britt Country Club and their family business, A-1 Plumbing, Heating & Appliance. Family was central to Lois’s life; she cherished raising her children and took great joy in her grandchildren, who were a continual source of happiness. Her personal interests included playing golf, gardening, staying involved in her family’s activities, and painting, an art in which she was particularly skilled.
Lois is survived by her children, Rebecca (Wade) Finch of Britt, Timothy (Quinann) Conaway of Las Vegas, NV, Tamara (Scott) Stieb of Highland, IL and Michael (Ryan) Conaway of Merrimac, MA; 12 grandchildren, Lindsey (Josh) Monjure, Tara (Cade) Kelly, Casey (Martin) Jensen, Daniel (Lainey) Finch, Heather (Carlos) Conaway, Samantha (Luke) Howell, Timothy (Alexis) Conaway Jr., Jacob, Zachary, Blake, Cory and Luke Stieb; 14 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her siblings, Imogene Burgardt and Don Weiland of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Conaway in 2021; her parents, Clarence and Leona Weiland; son, Rodney Clarence Conaway; granddaughter, Jennifer Rae Conaway; her siblings, Bud Weiland, Darlene Dunbar, Dean Weiland, Larry Weiland and Diane McKinney; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernice Weiland, John Burgardt, Darlene Weiland, Roger McKinney and Elaine Weiland.
