Louie Hawe was born April 18, 1925 in Belmond, Iowa to John and Myrtle (Rinehart) Hawe. On February 18, 1946 he married his high school sweetheart, Bernie, and they began their new life on the farm in Dows. Later they purchased a farm near Hayfield where they enjoyed farm life for many years until retiring and moving to their new condominium on the Garner Golf Course. Louie was a devoted spouse, father, son and friend. He loved life on the farm enjoying every part of growing his crops, including walking beans and picking rocks. He served several years on the Farmer’s Cooperative as a board member. Louie and Bernie enjoyed playing 500 with friends and Sunday afternoon visits to the neighbors. After retirement he took on some new hobbies; golf, shooting pool and travel to Arizona every year. Louie was an excellent golfer (although he didn’t think so), but when golfing with friends they never kept score.

Louie enjoyed traveling with Bernie, taking family trips every summer and later spending their winters in Arizona. One of their favorite trips was to Ireland to see the birthplace of his mother-in-law and attend a family wedding in Cavan, Ireland. They also celebrated a very memorable 25th anniversary with a trip to Hawaii. Ballroom dancing was a favorite activity for Louie and Bernie, with The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake being one of their “first dates”. In Arizona their park model was conveniently right across from the ballroom and considered a prime spot for activity.

Those surviving Louie are his children, Allen (Cheryl) Hawe of Garner, Larry (Paula) Hawe of Fort Collins, CO, Cindy (Leonard) Pistek of Britt, Sandy (Bob) Eimers of Ankeny; his grandchildren, Travis (Beth) Hawe, Sarah (Tim) Goss, Adam (Shylouh) Stenberg, Anthony (Andres) DiGeronimo-Stenberg, Cord (Karri) Stenberg, Brad Hawe, Jeff Hawe, Laura (Logan) Powell, Doug (Jennie) Pistek, Kathleen (Tim) Schwan, Marie (Mark) Klein, Iveree (Neil) Hoth, Ashlee Christians, Brady Christians; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Louie was preceded in death by his wife Bernie; his parents; and a sister, Elvina Anderson.
