Paul J. Young, 90, of Garner, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025, at his home.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2025, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Andrew Marr officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a Scriptural wake service at 3:30 p.m. followed by a parish rosary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Garner Volunteer Ambulance Service or Garner Fire Department in memory of Paul.
Paul Joseph Young, the son of Joseph and Rose (Klesel) Young, was born May 9, 1935, on the family farm west of Garner. He attended the rural schools of Garfield Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1953. On August 16, 1956, he married Margaret “Mag” Jakoubek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed and raised their family on the family farm west of Garner. Besides farming, Paul also worked for Purina for a time and was one of the first welders at Iowa Mold and Tool in Garner. In 1981, Paul and Mag moved into their new home in Garner. Paul was a school bus driver for Garner-Hayfield Community Schools for over 40 years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, coffeeing at Casey’s in the morning, and playing cards, especially 500.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council and was one of the first eucharistic ministers at the church. He was a very religious man and prayed the rosary daily.
Paul is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Mag, of Garner; four children, Monica Legge of Garner, Ron (Marlene) Young of Clear Lake, Marv (Jacki) Young of Garner and Jane (Dave) Weiland of Sheffield; 11 grandchildren and their families, Marc Legge, Tom (Kirsty) Legge, Jim (Shelby) Legge and their daughter, Annabelle, Joe Young and his son, Jace, Ben (Ashley) Young and their three children, Palmer, Kasen and Bryor, Mallory (Tad) Hartwig and their three children, Piper, Gwen and Rook, Courtney (Nate) Pribyl and their two children, Amaya and Oakley, Jake (Jamie) Young and their daughter, Hattie, Jennifer (Brody) Franzeen, Kristine (Trent) Trask and their two children, Jay and Paxton and Sarah Weiland; his sister, Lorraine Chizek of Britt; two sisters-in-law, Jean Young of Garner and Gert Wellik of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Michael Legge; grandsons, Matthew Legge and Nate Weiland; great-granddaughter, Nora Legge; sisters, Dorothy Huinker, Evelyn Pavelka and Margie Becker; and brother, Don Young.
