Perry W. Schaeffer

Perry W. Schaeffer passed away on July 27, 2026, at the age of 82.

Perry Wayne Schaeffer was born on August 15, 1943, in Eureka, South Dakota, to Floyd and Alvina Schaeffer. He graduated from Eureka High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. During his school years, he was active in both music and athletics, and he competed as a varsity wrestler in college. A man of many talents and interests, Perry enjoyed fishing, water skiing, sailing, and kayaking. His curiosity and creativity led him to pursue a wide range of endeavors throughout his life, including becoming a private pilot, piano tuner, freelance cartoonist, and award-winning woodcarver. On June 6, 1965, Perry married his lifelong partner, LaVaun Fischer. Together they built a loving family and raised two sons, Byron and Michael. Perry devoted 34 years to education as a junior high science teacher, including 30 years with the Garner-Hayfield Community School District. He was respected by students, colleagues, and the community for his dedication to teaching and his passion for learning. Service was an important part of Perry's life. He served as both a Deacon and Elder at Garner United Church of Christ and was a dedicated member of the Garner Library Board for 22 years.

At age 55, Perry retired from teaching and moved with LaVaun to Ankeny, Iowa, to be closer to their grandchildren. Together they enjoyed a fulfilling retirement, splitting their time between Ankeny and Mesa, Arizona. Their adventures took them to all 50 states, on numerous cruises, and to destinations including Australia, Canada, Mexico, and several countries throughout Europe.

Perry is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, LaVaun; his sons, Byron (Meghan) and Michael (Allison); five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; his brother, Ken (Kathleen) Schaeffer; and his sister, Dorothy (David) Dickens.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rodney Schaeffer.

Perry will be remembered for his devotion to family, his love of learning, his many talents, and the kindness and quiet strength he shared with all who knew him.
