WODEN – Robert C. Bird, 84, of Woden died Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Westview Care Center in Britt.
Graveside services will be held 10 A.M., Monday, June 20th at Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden with Pastor Judy Junkermeier officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
A memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 5 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Woden.
Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church in Woden, Hospice of North Iowa or to the donor’s choice.
Robert Clarence Bird, the son of Clarence and Mina (Ward) Bird, was born December 12, 1931 in Bingham Township, Hancock County. He attended Bingham No. 9 country school and graduated from Woden High School in 1949. Robert continued his education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where he received his elementary teaching degree. Robert served his country the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa and taught junior high and sixth grade in Thompson, Tampa, FL, St. Ansgar, Waterloo, Garwin and Woden-Crystal Lake Schools. After receiving a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Northern Iowa, he was a librarian and taught some high school subjects. Robert enjoyed traveling, having visited 46 states, eight Canadian provinces and ten European countries and singing in barbershop and community choruses in the area. Robert was also an avid sports fan following the three state universities as well as professional sports.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Woden, River City Barbershop Chorus, Woden American Legion and the Hancock County Historical Society.
Robert is survived by his brother, Dale (Glenys) Bird of Vero Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irma McVey; and brother, Charles.
