GOODELL - Robert J. Balk, 76, of Goodell died Monday, November 18, 2013 at his home.
Memorial services will be held 3 P.M., Friday, November 29th at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E.4th St., in Garner with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 P.M., Friday at the funeral chapel.
Robert Joseph Balk, the son of Urich "Ole" and Rose (Weinfurter) Balk, was born May 24, 1937 at Lawler, Iowa. He attended school and worked for area farmers. On January 27, 1962 he married Ann Melver at Schley. They lived Schley, Osage and in 1975 moved to Klemme. In 1978 they moved their home in Goodell. Robert was employed at McLaughlin Bros Chevrolet in Belmond as a body and paint technician but due to his respiratory problems he then detailed cars until he retired after 27 years in 2005. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, going to threshing and steam engine shows.
Bob is survived by his two children, Donna (Craig) Diekhuis of Mason City and LaVanda (Bruce) Bergeson of Towanda, KS; two grandchildren, Michele (Dean) Simkins and Dylan Bergeson; brothers, Floyd, Francis, Donald and Ronald Balk; and sisters, Patty and Alma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann, Feb. 11, 2011; granddaughter, Rhonda Heginger; and siblings, Julius, James, Walter, Arthur, Leona, Reuben and Rita.
