Wanda Powers, the daughter of Pete and Viola (Broome) Lewerke, was born on February 8, 1938, in Britt. She attended schools throughout north Iowa, including Hayfield, Crystal Lake, Grant Township, Dolliver and Britt. On May 23, 1954, she married Jack Powers at Britt Zion Church of the Nazarene. The couple lived near Crystal Lake until 1955 when they moved to Garner where they raised their six children. Wanda did childcare for several years and worked at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools for 24 years until her retirement. She enjoyed playing piano, singing, jigsaw puzzles, and card games, but mostly she loved spending time with her family. Her home was the family gathering place for coffee nearly every morning for many years. Wanda’s journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in Jesus.

She was a long-time member of Britt Zion Church of the Nazarene, serving in various roles. In recent years, she faithfully attended Garner Evangelical Free Church. Her love for God and others continued to grow throughout her lifetime.

Wanda is survived by her six children, Marcia (Ron) Upmeyer of Garner, Jacklyn (Don) Malek of Garner, Jim (Pat) Powers of Garner, Jeff (Biz) Powers of Garner, Brenda (Jim) Haag of Indianola and Brent (Teri) Powers of Garner; 14 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; siblings, Bob (Marline) Lewerke of Garner, Jerry Lewerke (special friend, Mary Clark) of Garner, David Lewerke of Prescott, AZ and Sherry Langlitz of Garner; a brother-in-law, Marlen Hanson of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.
